Welcome to South Georgia Coalition to End Homelessness

Mission of the Coalition:
The purpose of the South Georgia Coalition to End Homelessness is to eradicate the problems causing homelessness.

Introduction to the Coalition:
The South Georgia Coalition to End Homelessness, Incorporated (SGCEH) was founded by a coalition of socialservice providers and concerned citizens in 1995. The organization operates within an 18-county area of South Central Georgia known as the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) Region 11. The counties in this region are also known as South Health District 8-1 and District 9-2.

The goals of SGCEH are to support the coordination of homeless service activities within the region, to identify and prioritize needs of homeless and near-homeless populations and to locate resources meeting those needs to improve the overall quality of life for those living within the service area. The Coalition board consists of representatives from service agencies, shelters, local government providers of homeless services and concerned citizens from the community. The Coalition board works cooperatively to set regional priorities, establish goals and develop programs and projects to meet needs.

The SGCEH coordinates homeless and HOPWA housing activities with member service agencies, local governments and state organizations. The SGCEH established program using Housing Opportunities for Person with AIDS (HOPWA) funds, securing funds to rehabilitate facilities to house the HOPWA program, and locating financial resources to develop a transitional housing program shelter addition for homeless, two-parent families and those headed by single males. The SGCEH serves as a liaison between the service agencies and various government offices responsible for completing the construction projects and assists as necessary to assure project success.

The SGCEH has initiated a regional 211 Information and Referral system to address the need for improved communication about available programs in the region. In addition, the system will collect data on caller need. This will be the first comprehensive system in the region for collecting this type of data. The 211 system, as well as the HOPWA program, utilizes the Pathways Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) to comply with HUD mandates to begin collecting an unduplicated homeless count by 2004.
